"Alcuni film di Rossellini esistono in varie versioni che differiscono per montaggio, durata e doppiaggio. Era notte a Roma non fa eccezione. A volte, i tagli e le modifiche sono opera dello stesso regista, altre volte sono volute dai produttori/distributori nazionali, per rendere il film "più fruibile" al pubblico. Data questa abbondanza di versioni risulta impossibile, se non poco corretto, fare comparazioni con edizioni estere. Ad esempio, Optimum England has published a master French film , heavily edited and poor, and it would be useless to compare the versions in Italian.

Medusa, philological reconstruction work, offers two different versions: the Italian film, and the longer, presented at Cannes in 1960. Audio is perfect for both versions, dynamic and above all intelligible successful revision in 5.1 Dolby Digital. Too bad that unfortunately the video of both versions is encoded in letterbox, and then you have to zoom losing definition and with the nagging feeling of figures and environments "bomb" on video. Exemplary apparatus critical and the wonderful comment Aprà Adriano, Rossellini's greatest scholar alive, makes you forget for a while 'the defect that, if present, could make this edition very good.
