NB: the cover of the Blu-ray gives a wrong letterbox HR of 1.66 (which would not be possible on a BD) and only a Dolby 2.0, the latter is a half-truth, since it is present, but also includes a lossless track.
And this is one of those Blu-ray already is a candidate for a possible list of "albums of the year." The film originally came out on DVD very soon in a copy indecent, well before the Criterion restoration and that of 2008 by various associations. This latest digital restoration is what we find on this Blu-ray St. Paul (another great success after The Great Dictator), not only that seems to have been cleaned up again. The master HD is presented here with the best audio / video encoding on the square, no acceleration PAL, progressive transfer. The result is a practically perfect product, far superior to any support SD. The amount of detail that you gain is generally high, even compared to the Criterion that a contrast was slightly better (but perhaps less appropriate). If the b / w DVD American seemed perfect, you have to think again to see how it is more than dirt and toned on BD, not counting artifacts, the image that you have less on both sides, etc.. There are traces of dirt here and there. The dual mono Dolby Digital is of good quality, but is rather closed, this has been almost completely resolved thanks to a true HD remastering, much more intelligible, more points are dirty, but I'm sure has been given the maximum. What is ridiculous are the extras, only about twenty minutes in SD, not at all important also.
A day will come another BD by Arrow Films, we see what they did to them, but do better than that is almost impossible .
